Rangok Skies is a spectacle-filled vertically scrolling arcade shoot ‘em up that delivers a real feast of the eyes as you battle swarms of enemies and huge bosses in a world that’s plunged into chaos.
Drawing inspiration from arcade classics like DoDonPachi, Gunbird and Strikers 1945, Rangok Skies blends bullet hell with classic old school arcade shoot ‘em up action. It takes place long after a great vampire war which saw humanity defeating the vampire lord Rangok and separating his spear into four pieces. However recently a message went out that anyone who reunites the spear will receive a reward beyond their wildest dreams. War has erupted and it’s up to four uniquely skilled pilots to help decide the fate of the world.
The current build of Rangok Skies features one level and three playable characters, each with their own unique ships, weapons and smart bombs (in the full game they each have their own unique story endings too). It’s playable in single-player or local co-op and it even has a TATE Mode that allows you to flip your monitor vertically.
As soon as you start the level there’s a LOT happening on screen and it doesn’t let up until the boss is dead. The ridiculous amount of on-screen eye-candy can take a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it then it’s possible to blast your way through the level without dying (and even earn a place on the online leaderboard).
The pixel art visuals are wonderfully chunky and colorful, and the designs of the enemies, mini-bosses and end boss are excellent. It’s a real visual extravaganza and the gameplay will really test your shooting skills. A spectacle-filled shump well worth pulling the trigger on.
