Shrouded is a very freaky retro Lovecraftian survival horror adventure where a young woman unravels the dark secrets of a mysterious library that’s claimed the lives of 27 people.
In Shrouded you follow the story of Carmen, a young university student who is digging into the local history of her town. The local library would be the perfect place to carry out this research, if it wasn’t for the fact that there’s a malevolent darkness lurking within it that has caused the disappearance of 27 people and the fact that your brother is lost in there somewhere. You came seeking knowledge, but as you explore you’re going to learn and see things that you’d rather forget.
The current build of Shrouded takes around 30 minutes to play through and takes some interesting twists along the way. As you explore the library you uncover clues and discover useful objects that can help you solve puzzles and delve deeper into its recesses. You can die in Shrouded though (mainly due to a mysterious dark spirit that appears intermittently and chases you), so you have to be careful and be prepared to run at any moment.
The save point locations could do with a bit of optimization to avoid you having to repeat the same dialogue/cut-scenes if you die (at the elevators for example), but other than that it’s a very impressive retro survival horror adventure. The retro 2D art style works well, the puzzles are interesting, there are some pretty freaky moments and the narrative is very intriguing. A creepy cryptic library well worth exploring.
