Signs of the Sojourner is a narrative driven deck-building card game where your cards help you communicate and form relationships as you travel through a near-future Earth-like world.
In Signs of the Sojourner you explore the world, meet people and collect foods to bring back to your shop in your hometown. To converse with people, you and the person you meet take it in turn to lay cards, with the conversations only being successful if the symbols on the sides of the cards all match (a little like dominoes).
You start with a very limited variety of cards, which essentially gives you a very limited vocabulary. Each time you converse with someone then you are able to add a new type of card to your deck and sacrifice an old one. This means that your vocabulary evolves over time with the more people you meet and connect with, but it may end up being that when you go back to your home town you’ll no longer have the cards needed to communicate to your old friends and neighbors.
The current build of Signs of the Sojourner is missing audio and takes around five minutes to get into the more interesting/challenging conversations, but it’s a very clever concept. The artwork is excellent and the narrative is fun, but it’s the way the deck-building gameplay works that most impresses. Each new conversation and relationship you form out in the world causes you to evolve your vocabulary and makes fitting in when you back home that little bit tricker. As you explore the world, enjoy new experiences and form new relationships what will you leave behind?
