Song of Morus: Kaleido Combat is a brain-melting isometric bullet-hell shoot ’em up where a taoist priestess and a catholic nun do battle in a kaleidoscopic dimension.
Created for the Global Game Jam 2022, Song of Morus: Kaleido Combat is a wonderfully weird bullet hell shoot ‘em up that takes place within a kaleidoscopic dimension. It follows the strange story of a taoist priestess who is attempting to protect a mind-controlled vampire from a catholic nun. It’s all very weird and perhaps would make more sense if you’ve played more of the Song of Morus games, but what’s remarkable about Kaleido Combat is the gameplay.
Song of Morus: Kaleido Combat only features one battle, but it’s a tough one and sees you controlling the taoist priestess as she does battle with the catholic nun. The fact that it takes place within a kaleidoscopic dimension means that there’s a lot to keep track of – with multiple versions of the game bullets, structures, yourself and the nun all swarming the screen.
It is a very short game and the story is downright bizarre, but doing battle in Song of Morus: Kaleido Combat’s kaleidoscopic dimension is a remarkable experience. It’s a great concept that would be perfect for expanding on into something bigger.
