Spectral Escape is a clevelry crafted pixel art puzzle adventure where you have to find ways to kill yourself to escape from a Wild West prison.
Currently in development by Mors (creator of the excellent Super Mario Flashback game) Spectral Escape is an expanded version of the Ghostly Getaway game jam prototype featured on Alpha Beta Gamer back in 2018. In the game you take on the role of Poncho – the world’s most fearsome cowboy who has been framed for a crime he didn’t commit and locked up in prison. He now needs to make his escape and prove his innocence, but there’s no way his body will fit through the barred prison doors – he’ll just have to kill himself and become a ghost!
Each level in Spectral Escape is a single screen puzzle where you need to find a way to kill yourself and make your way to the exit. Finding a way to kill yourself can be surprisingly tricky and you need to make sure you’ve created a path for your ghost to follow first because you can only interact with objects when you’re alive. For a little more challenge there are also optional little piggies to collect that you can only grab when you’re alive.
It’s a fun little puzzler with some great pixel art animation, a delightfully macabre premise and lots of cleverly crafted levels that require a lot of spatial awareness and forward planning to solve. Dying in video games is normally really easy, Spectral Escape makes you work for it!
