Star Citizen is having a free Alpha weekend, with players able to download the game and join in Chris Roberts’ $192,414,994 crowd funded massively multiplayer space trading and combat game right now.
Originally planned for a 2014 release and still only in Alpha, Star Citizen is a strange behemoth of a game that gets more and more delayed with each new feature and stretch goal the devs add. The current build is Alpha 3.2, and allows up to 50 players to travel the universe together and take part in 30 different procedurally generated mission types with 60 ships and 300 weapons, armor and character items.
It’s got a long way to go yet, but it’s nice to see that Star Citizen is finally turning into a real game. The attention to detail and the scope of the game is commendable, and it could really be the ultimate space exploration/combat game when it’s finally complete (sometime around 2050). The free Open Alpha weekend is live now and will close on Monday August 27th, so jump in quick to see what see what all the fuss is about!
