Starbuster is a fantastic new Sci-Fi action platforming adventure that plays like a blend of Mega Man Zero and Sonic as a sentient droid and a lizard woman face off against a nefarious imperial army.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer last year, Starbuster is a fantastic Sci-Fi action platformer with huge multi-route levels, big bosses, lots of interchangeable character upgrades and a well written story with interesting characters. It follows the story of Alpha, an experimental combat android that becomes sentient and tries to escape its creators, meeting a helpful band of oddball heroes along the way.
The current build of Starbuster features a huge chunk of gameplay, with three massive sprawling levels that take around an hour minutes to play through, complete with big boss fights and an intermission in your base where you can get to know the characters a bit better. It has two playable characters (Alpha the Android and Cassie the Lizard), each of which has their own unique weapons, abilities and stories.
The gameplay in Starbuster is fast paced, spectacle-filled and a hell of a lot of fun. Both characters are a joy to control (slicing up robots with Alpha’s plasma sword is particularly enjoyable), and the levels are very well designed – filled with little secrets and continually throwing up new hazards and enemies to deal with. Both characters are formidable fighters and there are around 30 unique modifiers that you can find scattered around the levels to dramatically alter your character’s weapons and abilities.
Starbuster really does have everything you could possibly want from a 2D action platformer – gorgeous pixel art animation, fast paced action, large varied multi-route levels, epic boss fights, lots of character customization and great weapons. It even manages to cram in a sense of humor, likeable characters and interesting story (which is pretty rare for an action platformer). Highly recommended.
