We first covered Storium back when it was in Alpha, It’s a wonderful and unique online storytelling game that allows players to create a story through a series of scenes, reacting to obstacles and people as you come across them. It’s played with 3 people, with one person playing as the Narrator, and the other 2 playing as the characters.
Since launching, the Storium Kickstarter has been hugely successful, surpassing it’s initial $25,000 goal five times already. Thanks to the stretch goals this has unlocked there will now be “worlds” (reusable storytelling playsets) created by 43 different novelists, game designers, and storytellers — people who have won awards that include the Emmy, Hugo, Campbell, Nebula, Locus, Stoker, ENnie, and Origin awards. The last World unlocked is by being written by famed game designer Jordan Weisman, the creator of Shadowrun, Crimson Skies and BattleTech!
This success is thanks largely to the huge amount of support it has received through Tumblr. Storium Creator Stephen Hood is very thankful for all the support – “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone on Tumblr who has spread the word about Storium! Alpha Beta Gamer’s first post about Storium was shared tens of thousands of times and has had a huge impact on our Kickstarter campaign. We can’t thank the Tumblr community enough for their support.”
He’s also announced a very special Kickstarter Stretch Goal – Storium for Schools! If they hit $200K in funding they’ll build a version of Storium that’s designed for students, teachers, and schools. A large number of backers have told them that they’d like to use Storium in the classroom (all the way up to the college level). We wish them all the best, it’s a wonderful idea and a real way of making learning fun, it certainly beats writing essays on Jane Eyre anyway!
