Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones features a dark and atmospheric blend of Lovecraftian horror, role playing and turn based tactical combat as you unravel a dark mystery in a doomed land.
Your goal in Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is not to save the world, that battle has already been lost. Instead you set out to pursue your own goals, as you search for salvation and vengeance in a world that’s gone to hell. The lore of Stygian draws inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, filled with cosmic horror and dread. It’s a world that’s descended into mob rule and where cigarettes are the main form of currency and insanity is rampant.
You can choose from eight different main character archetypes, each with their own backstory and customisable stats. You then set out on an adventure that will test your sanity and your resolve. There’s lots to do in the games stylish 2D world, with lots of odd characters to meet (some of which you can add to your party), secrets to discover, loot to find and enemies to fight. You explore the world by pointing and clicking wherever you want to go or interact with, with the game switching to an X-Com-esque turn based combat system when you encounter enemies.
The current demo build features over an hours worth of gameplay and really impressed with its writing, world building, fantastic artwork and easily accessible turn based combat system. The dark and gloomy world of Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is a fascinating place to explore – a doomed civilisation that’s clinging on to the last scraps of sanity. It makes for a remarkable experience that will really suck you in. Highly recommended.
