SUFFER is a bloody and brutally difficult retro first person shooter that eschews cutscenes, hand-holding and realism for old school run n’ gun action where speed and skill all that will keep you alive.
In SUFFER you take control of a fast moving samurai sword wielding protagonist who must run, gun, slice, dash and jump her way through a series of challenging levels. The visuals are fondly reminiscent of the PS1 era and the gameplay harkens back to classics like Doom and Quake.
The current demo build features 25 levels, and you’ll need some real skill to make your way through all of them. There’s no recharging health bar or cover mechanics here – you have to keep, moving, strafing and shooting to survive. It’s worth searching the levels of secrets too as you’ll often come across ammo, weapons or special anarchy tokens.
Some of the combat does feel a little too imprecise at the moment (lining up a shot can be tough and the guns could be more accurate), but other than that SUFFER is a blast. The gameplay is fast paced and fun, the level design is great and the cartoony retro visuals are blood-splattered delight. Well worth checking out for some old school run n’ gun fun.
