Super Mario and the Rainbow Stars is a superb Mario fan game where Mario makes a new friend and sets out to save the world from The Dark Star.
Drawing inspiration from the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series, in Super Mario and the Rainbow Stars Bowser is up to his old tricks, with him planning to get his hands on a dark power source during the annual Star Festival. Meanwhile Mario’s out for a hot air balloon ride that is cut short after it collides with a falling star called Starry. Mario teams up with Starry and sets out to find all of the Rainbow Stars scattered around the Mushroom Kingdom to stop a dark force being unleashed upon the world.
Even though it’s a demo, the current build of Super Mario and the Rainbow Stars is already pretty massive, with one full chapter that takes around two hours to play through (and longer if you’re looking for all the secrets). It plays well, with Mario handling like an official Mario game and the aimable attacks of Starry coming in handy for eliminating enemies and solving puzzles. There’s a nice variety between the levels too, with lots of fun set-pieces, secrets, power-ups and boss battles.
If all that wasn’t enough, then it also comes with a fully fleshed out story, memorable characters and a plenty of gags with a very high hit-rate. All in, it makes for something that looks set to become one of the best 2D Mario games since the SNES era, and one that has its own unique style and personality. Highly recommended.
