Tempest Rising is a new RTS game that’s essentially a spiritual successor to Command & Conquer, and a very good one too!
If you’ve ever played Command & Conquer you’ll immediately feel right at home when booting up Tempest Rising. It’s a classic C&C style RTS with Tiberium (Tempest) harvesting, mobile bases, a C&C-esque UI, and very similar building and unit types. It even has two separate single-player campaigns that are played via different factions that are essentially the GDI and the Brotherhood of Nod (complete with cutscenes). There will also be a third faction in the full game and online multiplayer.
The Tempest Rising demo features two single-player campaign levels, one where you play as the Global Defense Forces (essentially the GDI) and another where you play as the Tempest Dynasty (Brotherhood of Nod). Both of them are a lot of fun to play, with a good sense of pace, a mixture of objectives and very intuitive gameplay (especially if you’ve ever played a C&C game). The enemy’s habit of placing explosive barrels next to its defences also makes for some entertaining explosions!
Needless to say Tempest Rising is a Command & Conquer game in all but name. That’s really not a bad thing though as Command & Conquer fans have had pretty slim pickings since the glory days well over a decade ago. It’s clearly been made by fans who are passionate about the series and the amount of love they’ve put into it really shows. It’s not a clone, it’s a beautifully crafted hommage that looks set to breathe life into the RTS genre by going back to its roots. Highly recommended.
