The Cursed Knight is a brand new old school 16-bit action platforming adventure that’s coming to the SEGA Genesis!
Drawing inspiration from 16-bit classics such as Mega Man X, The Cursed Knight may be coming along some 34 years after the console’s original release, but it’s looking like it’s going to be one of the best games ever made for the SEGA Genesis. In the game you follow the adventure of a knight whose beloved princess is murdered by space pirates and sets out in search of the Cube of Power to help save her. The odds are against him, but thankfully the Knight is a genetically modified human who worships an AI Skull God, which bestows him with some pretty nifty abilities.
The Cursed Knight kickstarter demo features two large levels and is a hell of a lot of fun. It features a mixture of side-scrolling shoot ‘em up, action platforming and gravity-inverting puzzle platforming elements, as well as a big boss fight. Seasoned retro arcade action platformer players may want to crank up the difficulty a little as the base difficulty is a little easy. The controls feel great though, there’s a nice amount of variety, and judging by the trailer, there’s a lot of cool gameplay twists coming in the full game too.
It plays beautifully and considering it’s playing on a machine that’s over three decades old, the pixel art visuals in The Cursed Knight are mind-blowing. The visuals put most modern action platformers to shame and there are some wonderful little graphics touches – such as the way the lighting changes mid level as dusk rolls in. What’s also surprising is that the story is genuinely good and a little more mature than you’d expect from the genre. Add to that one of the best music soundtracks ever to be piped out of SEGA’s machine and you have a stone cold classic in the making. Highly recommended.
Note: You’ll need a SEGA Genesis emulator such to play the demo
