The Fallen Crown is a very impressive new metroidvania adventure being created for the Game Boy Color, which sees an undead knight unravelling the mysteries of an ancient monolith.
In The Fallen Crown you are the latest in a line of hopefuls who are attempting to discover the secrets of an ancient monolith called “The Tower”. May have died before you, but thankfully you’re already dead, so what’s the worst that could happen? Well for starters you could fall down a massive hole and smash your body so that all you’re left with is a skull. Which coincidentally, is exactly what happens!
The current build of The Fallen Crown features about 30 minutes of gameplay and really pushes the limits of what a GameBoy can do. It has melee combat, dodge-rolls, a variety of different weapons, responsive platforming, detailed environments, beautifully animated cutscenes and there are even some great little gags thrown in too.
At the moment the melee combat is a little bit clumsy (probably more down to the limitations of the hardware than anything else), but it could perhaps be alleviated a little by making the melee weapons a little longer. Aside from that though, it’s shaping up to be a fantastic metroidvania adventure that looks set to squeeze every last bit of juice out of the 25+ year old GameBoy Color hardware. Highly recommended.
