The Salt Order is a very tense first person horror game where you attempt to sneak through a creepy forest while laying lines of salt to keep monsters at bay.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer when it was a game jam prototype, The Salt Order is now being fleshed out into a fully salted horror game. In the game you are a prisoner who must atone for their sins by venturing into the Realm of the Endless Tree and retrieving a grimoire for the cabal of witches that have locked you up.
The path to the grimoire is perilous and filled with freaky Weeping Angel-esque tree monsters that only move when you’re not looking at them. If they catch you then they’ll kill you instantly, but the witches have bestowed upon you some magical salt. You can lay lines of salt and the tree monsters cannot pass over them – allowing you to block off pathways to prevent them following you. You only have a limited amount of salt though and you can only lay four lines at a time so you need to be careful where you use it.
The core gameplay and main play area of the new build of The Salt Order is pretty much the same as the game jam prototype, but it is much more accessible, more polished and it features an introduction scene that gives you a lot more narrative about what’s going on. They’re great improvements and it’s got a very tense atmosphere, the tree monsters are as terrifying as ever and the salt mechanics are a lot of fun. This is one time that salt is very good for your health!
