Unformed is a beautifully animated 2D action platforming metroidvania that draws inspiration from Chinese folklore and the works of H.P. Lovecraft as you play a heroine in a world where the blessing of immortality has turned into a curse.
Unformed features an interesting (if a little convoluted) plot that sees two cults that have formed around the promise of immortality, and the consummation of pieces of ancient Gods. There’s intense rivalry between the cults and things get worse when one of the old gods wakes up and all hell breaks loose. You play a soul collector who sets out on a quest to bring peace back to your valley and discover the real secret of eternal life, as well as embarking on several side quests with unique rewards and branching storylines.
It’s still early in development so does have a few rough edges, but the visuals are already very impressive and the dev team certainly know what they’re doing – assembled from veterans who have worked on the likes of Bioshock 2, Rayman, Splinter Cell and Rune Stone Keeper. The combat system in Unformed draws inspiration from the Dark Souls series, with each confrontation offering a real challenge as you dodge, parry and time attacks. It’s not quite as tough as From Software’s efforts, but it’s still pretty challenging, and will certainly punish the complacent. Ironically you’ll die quite often in this game that explores the curse of immortal life!
