Voidship: The Long Journey is a space exploring rogue-lite adventure that combines FTL-esque ship management with real-time top-down space combat as you set forth on a journey that will take several centuries to complete.
First covered on Alpha Beta Gamer last June while it was in Alpha, Voidship: The Long Journey feels like a natural evolution of FTL’s addictive roguelike space adventures. It follows an epic journey as you pilot your way through randomly generated maps, battling enemy ships, taking on missions and deciding how to deal with random events.
Your spaceship in Voidship: The Long Journey is entirely modular, allowing you to easily slot together different modules (and new modules you buy or find) to customise and upgrade your ship. Ships also can be destroyed module-by-module (including yours), so you can target specific parts of a ship during battle to try and cripple it.
The combat in Voidship: The Long Journey takes place in real-time and will test your ship management as well as your piloting skills. Your movement is quite slow in comparison to a traditional arcade space shooter so you need to be tactical about which parts of an enemy ship you target. Also it doesn’t hurt to have skilled crewmembers and some decent firepower. At any point you can switch between a traditional shooter mode and an RTS mode, though shooter mode is often preferable as you can avoid damage easier.
It’s a great game that takes the addictive space exploration adventures of FTL and fleshes it out with an epic campaign, lots of ship customisation and real-time top-down shooter gameplay.
