We Could Be Heroes is a carnage-filled retro side-scrolling beat ’em up where four heroes clean up the streets of a crime-riddled city.
Playable in single-player or two player co-op, in We Could Be Heroes you choose between four uniquely skilled heroes then set out to cause carnage on the streets. You can come to the aid of innocent civilians, you can ignore them or you can beat them up. Either way you’ll be doing a lot of fighting and leaving a trail of bodies in your wake.
You’ll also be leaving lots of destruction in your wake because the amount of environmental destruction in We Could Be Heroes is phenomenal. You can throw people through windows, smash through store shelves and throw enemies into the path of moving cars. Pretty much every object you find can be picked up and used as a weapon too – from guitars to old ladies’ handbags.
The character movement and combat does feel a little stiff initially, but once you get dad to it there’s a real old school charm to the game. The environmental destruction, the makeshift weapons and the ability to actually enter the shops along the streets makes for a very entertaining experience and makes you want to beat up everything and everyone you come across (innocent or not). Highly recommended.
