White Knuckle is a very intense first person speed-climbing horror game where you attempt to climb a massive brutalist megatower while being pursued by a gloopy sea of bodies.
In White Knuckle you are trapped in the depths of Sub-Structure 17 – a massive randomly generated concrete facility that’s filled with deadly creatures and is filled up with a gloopy sea of bodies called “The Mass”. You need to climb and you need to climb fast to keep ahead of the mass, but you need to be careful – one slip can mean death.
The climbing mechanics in White Knuckle are a little like Peaks of Yore, with you aiming your hands with the mouse and using LMB and RMB to grip and release them individually. This works really well and you also have an assortment of items that you can find lying around to aid your ascent, such as metal bars you can throw into the concrete to create handholds. You need to be careful though as if you carry too many things in your backpack your stamina will decrease.
At the moment there are no checkpoints whatsoever (there will be some in the full game), so it’s incredibly tough, but it’s a lot of fun. The climbing mechanics feel great and there’s a real sense of tension and urgency as you make your ascent. Highly recommended.
